Great Planes 72" CAP-21 Maiden

FIRST: I apologize for the blurry video. Clear blue sky seems to confuse the crap out of my iPhone camera, and I forgot to set fixed focus. My bad. This is the maiden flight of a "resto-mod" I did on a vintage Great Planes CAP-21. I converted it to electric, using a Sunnysky motor from the crashed 60" Edge, along with the servos too. I lightened the airframe as much as possible (mostly aft of t...

Logo 200, May 29 2024

First video of the Logo 200 I picked up recently. For those who don't know, the Logo 200 is actually an OMP M2 V2 with a Neo Mini flight control unit paired to a modified dual ESC from OMP to drive the main and tail motors. It flies well, but as I explain in the video the tail performance falls short of the OMP M2 and the Goosky S2.

I decided to start doing some short videos showing what's going on in JustPlaneChris' workshop. Today we're taking a look at a Great Planes CAP-21 "resto-mod" project. Pardon the messy bench, it's what happens when stuff is happening. ;)
Turfing the S2: May 5, 2024

I've been messing around with some modified pitch curves on the S2, trying to make it feel more like the Oxy 3 does when using VBar's "lightness" setting. It still needs work. Oh, and also a great crash. LOL

I was bored on a rainy Sunday so I installed a Spirit GT flight controller and loaded Spirit Aero software. The results were interesting, but not spectacular.

I like that large b&w "checkerboard" pattern that you did for the bottom of the plane. No guessing whether or not that model is inverted. 👍 Ps. I usually just do "Invasion" stripes.
Invasion stripes work too! The bold and big patterns are visible further out. Plus. less masking. LOL
That thing looks awesome. Great restoration!
Well done Chris. Looking good!
Looks like you have a "WINNER"...great job!!
Nice altitude you have hit _several_ times :D
Yup 399.99 feet is my preferred DLG cruising altitude :).
I wondered if anyone would comment on that. LOL
Nice 🙂
fantastic rc helicopter
That CAP-21 is going to look great! Also looks like the Hawk F5B could use a new motor :).
Just a new prop hub, which is out of stock! I need to see if I can find a different one.
@@JustPlaneChris Hope you find one! We need some hotliner videos to complement the helis and 3D planes!
Man! I think I listened to every episode of the inside Heli podcast back in the day. I've been out of the helicopter side of the hobby for a bit and I just fell right back in. These new Micro/Mini heli's have come a long way! Just Picked up and infusion 120 and I have a Goosky S1 on the way. This Logo 200 is on my Radar now too.
Ah, the good old days of the podcast! :) If you already fly VControl, the Logo 200 is fun. I wouldn't pay retail price for it, but if you can find a great deal for a used one go for it. Other than the ESC / FBL and frames, it's an OMP M2 V2. All the parts fit, even the canopy. Like I said in the video, I don't think the VBar does motor tails as well as the OMP or Goosky FBL does, but the cyclic feel is epic.
@@JustPlaneChris I definitely do not have V control. It sounds like its not worth it unless you are already in the ecosystem. Thanks for the info. Look forward to some more videos in the future.
@@KrazyKoots Yeah, the Logo 200 will only work with the VControl transmitter. You'll want to look for a used M2 V2 or Evo, or the Goosky S2. Both are amazing! No comparison at all to the previous generation of micros.
Fun project. Don't see wood cowls these days.
Sooooo tiny and green on green background!
It’s actually pretty easy to see, but I do prefer orange or yellow. I just need to find some filament in day glow orange and print a new canopy.
Impressive durability! Very cool to see a heli that can do some 3D and still be flyable after a crash.
It’s just ridiculously good. It’s capable of a lot more 3D than I can do, and is really hard to kill.
Nice flying, Chris…nice little heli. I like mine but don’t have many flights on it yet.
Thanks! The more I fly mine, the more I like it. It has helped me get over my fear of low and slow inverted stuff, now I'm working on inverted backwards, and piro stuff.
😁 *promo sm*

This video gave me a hit of nostalgia for the good old days of ATTF/IH with Chris and James!
Or some might say I just talk too much while flying. LOL
Pretty neat! I forgot Spirit can do airplanes. I love that it's worth more than the rest of the plane 🤣
It's worth at least 3x the rest of the plane! LOL
Nice to watch. Thanks for posting. I'm building the RV8 60e G2. I can't believe the short landings with flaps and strong headwind!...amazing. Best advice I've ever been given is just go out there and do full sessions of touch and go's. It's fine to go up and have fun with aerobatics but the most important skill a pilot needs, is to be able to land...smoothly and with style. Anyways...landings are always exciting and it's good to have the confidence you can land in one piece.
Thanks! Yes, I give that same advice to my fellow club members. I especially like to practice on windy days, it really sharpens the skills! The RV-8 can land really short even on calm days. You'll love shooting touch and goes with it. :)
Nice to have the field all to yourself. I find our field empty often too. Folks missing out! Or at work, retired or tired..LOL! Nice flying!
your much more talented than me and I really enjoy your vids bud. Im a safe and as3x spektrum and not sure if the aura is for me but awesome and when I do loops and twisted and turns guy I like to get it back into safe and love your videos and thanks for sharing👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks! The Aura doesn't have a "safe" mode to return you to level flight like the Spektrum radios. I encourage you to graduate out of using safe mode as soon as you can! Using it will teach you bad habits and will actually delay your progression into more advanced flying. :)
@@JustPlaneChris i dont use safe much i just like to have it in the event something happens. But thanks for the info.
Hey Chris Im Joe and Ive been looking into this bird with my friend Fat Guy Flys and Im on the fence on buying. Its like a bush bird and stohl bird. However the new version is awesome looking.. Its a Awesome bird and love your flight and gave you a big like and sub to support your channel. Thanks for sharing👍👍👍👍👍
Love it!
Fantastic and smooth flying, like always. What is your rotor head setup, which dampener and o-rings are you using?
Thank you! I'm running the 70/90 combo, but I also slightly sanded the delrin bits so they don't pre-load quite as much. As it turns out, I don't think I would have had to do any of that to get rid of low speed wobbles. Someone recently posted that he completely cured the wobbles by getting rid of the rubber dampers on the FBL tray! I'm about to switch mine over to VBar (currently Spirit) and I will remove those dampers at that time.
Fantastic flying. Thank you. What is your rotor head setup, which dampener and o-rings are you using?
Love it. Hadn't heard of of the piuma... Just looked into it... Head speed hold fine on a 5000 mah I guess?! How do you like it compared to a standard goblin or 12s feel?
Oh yeah, headspeed holds fine! That was at my middle headspeed (1600) with a bit at the end down at 1200. I almost never fly it at the highest (1800) it's just absurd at that speed. As for feel, I haven't flown a 700 in over 8 years till this, the last being the Protos 700. I don't really remember how it felt, I was too terrified to enjoy it! LOL You can set up a Piuma on 12s, and run smaller packs (2200-3600) and have ridiculous unboggable power if that's your thing.
Nice flying Chris! and great save. Always nice to watch your video's.
That's lovely! Need to go see what current Topmodel gliders are available! 👍
Sweet!
Man…what a great flyer, Chris…heck all the touch and goes would be fun enough, alone! That slip approach was great…I love doing those with my old Kadet MK2…can shoot beautiful approaches with that plane.
It really is a fun plane. It's looking pretty ratty now, having ended up in the trees after shucking the battery pack, but it still flies great. I've also got a head-tracking FPV setup for it that's a hoot.
The Oxy 3 is such a nice heli. I wish I had never sold mine. I miss it to this day. I don't know how hard spares are to come by, though. But I think I need smaller to practice on my backyard so will get the Goosky S1. But man I do remember the Oxy very dearly and wish I could fly it again.
It's one of those helis that flies better than it should, given its size. The Oxy 2 is also nice, but mine was displaced by a Goosky S2, another heli that flies better than it should! I haven't flown the S1, but I've heard they are equally good.
Is that the same Mini-Protos you had from IHP days?
Yep, it’s over 10 years old!
Nice flight Chris, sounded really windy. If I had my sound off I wouldn't be able to tell except for the occasional transitional lift and the wind sock. Very smooth, see you at a fun fly soon.
Thanks Terry! I enjoy the challenge of flying in the wind and trying to keep it smooth. :)
Nice flight Chris!
Thanks Rod! Hope you're well, long time no see.
Nice flying, Chris…I miss my 46” 3DHS Vyper….it was a great flyer.
Nice! Good stuff! What simulator or game is this? I've been doing lots of Microsoft flight simulator and real flight with my son, and I was telling him about Microsoft combat flight simulator... Didn't know what game was similar to it these days.
Kevin, this is IL-2 Sturmovik. I bought the base "Battle of Stalingrad" and then added "Battle of Bodenplatte" to get additional planes. It's amazing! VERY challenging flight dynamics, but you can dumb it down. For example, I use "simplified engine controls" so I don't have to manually control prop pitch, radiator flaps, mixture, superchargers... yes, it's got that level of detail! If you just want to have fun in a more arcade-style (with VR goggles and hand controllers) the Warplanes series for Oculus Quest is a blast. IL-2 really needs a HOTAS setup to work well. It's complicated, but fun.
Nice save!
Thanks! It was ugly, but it worked.
very nice . i hope you are doing well .
Thanks! Yes, doing well. :)
Retirement has it's perks ;-)
Nice flight man! What head speed is your super quiet mode?
Thank you! It's about 1150 at my lowest headspeed. Freakishly quiet, but still very capable.
Nice flying, Chris. That’s an awesome looking Heli! Nice collective management on those lower head speeds. Nice big air machine.
Thanks! It is absurdly light for a 700, so it makes collective management easier than you'd think.
Not boring at all, solid practice 👌
Thank you sir! I have a long way to go to reach even part of your skill level, but I'm having fun and I guess that's the most important thing. :)
Awesome, nice day for it too. 🙂
I like it, flies well, I added your channel. 👍
It looks very draggy
Yep, flat plate wing, square trailing edges. It's certainly not streamlined! It's meant to be a simple smashable model with low emotional investment. I have hotliners to fly when I want low drag. ;)
I like to fling my hand toss models from a wing tip like an outside frisbee toss to avoid any rear spinning props. Your model flies well.
I launch that way as well once it's trimmed. This being the first flight I decided to toss it the normal way.
I remember going through this with my Funjets. I always figured out thrustline first, then tweaked my CG until it held its lines and didn’t need any reflex to launch. Power off approaches and landings are so nice. I like to get my Ultra up high and just glide around and use energy management to do aerobatics on the way down…not to mention conserving the battery for a few hot passes at the end…lol! 140mph Funjet a few feet off the deck is always an attention getter.😂
I remember those Funjets! Most annoying prop sound ever. LOL
